From Reflections to Resolutions: Closing the Book on 2024 and Embracing 2025

As the final days of 2024 tick by, I find myself in a familiar yet transformative space—reflecting on the year behind me while dreaming of what lies ahead. This past year has been a whirlwind of growth, change, and unexpected twists that have shaped me in ways I could never have imagined.

Looking Back: Lessons from 2024
2024 was a year of starting over, redefining myself, and leaning into the beautiful chaos of life. It was a year of:

  • Resilience: Surviving breast cancer taught me to appreciate the small, miraculous moments of everyday life.
  • Responsibility: Having guardianship of my nephews brought new challenges but also a deeper sense of purpose and unconditional love.
  • Reinvention: Losing my job could have been a setback, but instead, it became an opportunity to realign with my passions and start a blog—a space to share my story and connect with others on their own journeys.

This year wasn’t perfect, and I didn’t always have it all together, but those moments of imperfection taught me the value of grace—for myself and others.

Looking Ahead: Dreams for 2025
If 2024 was about surviving, 2025 will be about thriving. I’m stepping into the new year with a heart full of hope and a head full of goals. Here’s what I’m looking forward to:

  • Embracing Creativity: Continuing to share my story on this blog and diving deeper into writing my book.
  • Fostering Connections: Growing my online community and engaging with others who are navigating similar paths.
  • Living with Intention: Balancing the demands of life with moments of joy—whether that’s a Disney adventure, a soul-food dinner with family, or simply a quiet walk to reflect and recharge.

As I turn the page to 2025, my mantra is simple: "Progress, not perfection." I’ll continue to show up, even when it’s messy. I’ll keep moving forward, even when the path isn’t clear. And I’ll remember that the journey itself is the greatest gift.

Thank you for being part of my story this year. Here’s to a new year filled with growth, laughter, and endless possibilities.

What are you reflecting on as you end 2024, and what are you most excited about in 2025? Let me know in the comments—I’d love to hear your story!

Happy New Year! 🎉

A Second-Grade Lesson in Resilience

When I decided to start substitute teaching, I wasn’t sure what to expect. It had been a while since I left the classroom, but the pull to connect with students and make an impact was still strong. Recently, I subbed at an elementary school that felt… different, in the best way. The principal was approachable and kind, the office staff was warm and welcoming, and the students were, for the most part, respectful and engaged. It felt like a well-oiled machine—organized and intentional.

As I moved through my day, I noticed a posting for a second-grade teaching position. The idea sparked something in me. After all, I’m certified and have years of experience in education. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to dive back into a full-time teaching role, especially since my attempts to return to corporate communications weren’t yielding much progress.

Corporate communications had always been my first love. I’ve spent years crafting strategies, delivering measurable results, and thriving in the fast-paced world of storytelling and brand building. But lately, the job search had been grueling. One opportunity, in particular, left a sour taste in my mouth: after three rounds of interviews and a 15-page communications plan—yes, 15 pages—that I presented with confidence, I was ghosted. No feedback, no updates, just silence. It was disheartening.

So, when this teaching opportunity presented itself, I thought, why not? Teaching had always been my second choice, but it was still something I loved. I spoke with the principal about the position, and he seemed interested. He encouraged me to apply, and soon enough, I was preparing to teach a mini math lesson—grouping ten ones into one ten. I put my all into it, hoping to show the same passion and skill that I’d poured into my previous classrooms.

A few days later, the principal called. I didn’t get the job.

He was kind, explaining that they loved my lesson and appreciated my approach. However, he mentioned that the second-grade class had significant behavioral challenges, and he needed to consider how best to manage those dynamics. His words struck a chord. Behavioral challenges? I’m no stranger to that. In my previous teaching roles, I’d managed classrooms where nearly half the students had behavioral issues. I know how to connect with students, set boundaries, and create an environment where learning can thrive. I’m used to it, and frankly, I’m good at it.

The rejection stung, but it left me frustrated and confused more than anything. What am I supposed to be doing right now? I’m confident in my skillset—as a communicator and as an educator—yet roadblocks keep appearing. I know I could secure a teaching job in an inner-city school; I’ve done it before. But given my health and the sheer energy it requires, I don’t think I have it in me anymore to go down that path.

So, what’s next? For now, the plan is simple: keep moving. I’ll continue subbing and keep contracting part-time as a communications consultant. Something will come through—it has to. This moment of uncertainty is exhausting, but I’ve learned that persistence pays off. Life has a way of working out, even if the road there is messy and unpredictable.

I’m holding onto hope that the right opportunity—whether in a classroom, a boardroom, or somewhere entirely unexpected—is just around the corner.

Thoughtful Holiday Gifts for Someone Battling Cancer or Serious Illness

As we enter the season of giving, it’s important to remember those in our lives who are facing challenging battles, whether it’s cancer or another serious illness. Thoughtful gifts can provide comfort, joy, and support during their journey. Here are some gift ideas, inspired by my own experience, that are sure to make a meaningful impact.

1. Lounge Wear

High-quality, soft pajamas, robes, or fuzzy socks are perfect for relaxing at home.

Why it matters: In between the many doctor appointments, all I wanted to do was lounge in something comfortable. My body was adjusting to so many medications, and soft, cozy clothing made those moments of rest a little more bearable.

2. Tea Sampler

A collection of caffeine-free teas for relaxation or digestion.

Why it matters: I’m a tea addict, and teas helped me stay hydrated, relaxed, and supported my digestion, especially when other beverages felt too harsh. Be sure to stick with caffeine-free options to avoid overstimulation.

3. Streaming Subscription

A subscription to Netflix, Hulu, or Disney+ gives easy access to movies and shows.

Why it matters: I had plenty of lounging time during medical leave, and TV became a much-needed distraction. Reading, which I once loved, felt like too much effort. Streaming services kept my mind occupied, and they can do the same for your loved one. Bonus points if you recommend a few shows or movies to help them get started!

4. Photo Book or Journal

A handmade photo album or a journal for reflections or memories.

Why it matters: During my initial cancer diagnosis, I took tons of photos to document my journey. Looking back, I wish I’d organized them into a photo book rather than leaving them on my phone or external drive. A beautiful album or journal could help your loved one preserve their memories in a meaningful way.

5. Gift Cards

For groceries, gas, or other daily needs.

Why it matters: The trips to the doctor’s office add up quickly, and gas gift cards are incredibly helpful. A grocery gift card is also thoughtful, as treatment can alter taste buds, and eating habits may change over time. Let them choose the snacks and meals that work for them in the moment.

6. Subscription Box

A curated wellness box like Therabox, or something similar.

Why it matters: There are so many small businesses offering beautiful subscription services tailored for relaxation and self-care. These boxes often include thoughtful, handpicked items that can bring a little extra joy into their day.

7. Memory-Making Outing

A small, low-energy activity like a drive-through holiday light show.

Why it matters: Experiences like these are priceless. As much as your loved one may not want to express it, scary thoughts often arise...How much time do I have left? Creating and sharing memories becomes even more meaningful.

For me, spending time with my nephews, whether it’s going to the movies, playing one of their favorite games, or surprising them with a treat, has created memories I’ll cherish forever. Small moments like these matter more than words can say.

Final Thoughts

The best gifts for someone battling cancer or serious illness are those that bring comfort, ease stress, and help create meaningful moments. Thoughtfulness and intentionality go a long way, and even the simplest gesture can make their journey a little brighter.

This holiday season, consider giving a gift that shows love and care. Whether it’s cozy loungewear, a relaxing tea sampler, or a memory-making experience, your kindness will mean the world to them.

Which of these gifts will you choose to brighten someone’s holiday? Let me know in the comments!

Defying Gravity: How to Embrace Your Inner Elphaba When Life Goes Off Script

Life has a funny way of taking us places we never planned to go. Much like Elphaba in Wicked, who sings her defiant and empowering anthem "Defying Gravity", we all face moments where we must rise above expectations, defy the odds, and discover our own strength. For me, those moments came in ways I never imagined—moments that turned my world upside down but ultimately taught me to soar in ways I hadn’t thought possible.

At 42, my life took an unexpected turn. I lost my job, a career I’d poured years into, and suddenly, I was faced with a future I hadn’t planned. As if that wasn’t enough, I also became the guardian of my two nephews, stepping into a role I never anticipated. My days were filled with school runs, homework help, and trying to figure out how to create stability for them in the midst of my own uncertainty.

And just when I thought I was beginning to find my footing, life threw me another curveball: my fourth cancer diagnosis. It was a moment that could have crushed me. I had to learn to live within my “new normal” and to acknowledge the physical and mental limits that came with treatment and recovery. Tasks I once did effortlessly now required careful thought and pacing. It was a humbling and often frustrating adjustment, but it also forced me to see life from a different perspective.

Like Elphaba, I realized I had two choices: to stay tethered to the disappointment and fear that threatened to hold me down or to embrace the strength within me and rise above it.

Here’s what I learned about defying gravity in my own life:

  1. Letting Go of Expectations: I had to release the idea of the life I thought I’d have. My career, my independence, and even my physical abilities looked different than I’d imagined. But letting go wasn’t about giving up; it was about creating space for something new.

  2. Owning My Story: I learned to own my struggles and my resilience. Cancer doesn’t define me, but it’s a part of my journey. Becoming a guardian wasn’t in my plan, but it became one of my greatest joys. Every twist and turn added to the story of who I am today.

  3. Taking Small, Brave Steps: Defying gravity doesn’t always mean dramatic leaps. Sometimes, it’s the little steps—like asking for help when I need it, prioritizing my health, or choosing to keep going when it feels easier to stop—that matter the most.

Elphaba may have decided to “fly solo” in her journey, but I’ve learned that having a community, even if it’s just one person, can make all the difference. For me, that person is my best friend.

He’s been there through every high and low, always just a phone call or a short drive away. Whether it’s offering a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, or a much-needed hug, he’s been my rock. His unwavering support—mentally, emotionally, and even financially at times—reminds me that I don’t have to face life’s challenges alone.

Your community doesn’t have to be big. It could be a family member, a friend, or even a supportive online group. What matters is knowing you have someone to lean on when the weight of the world feels too heavy.

In the midst of challenges, I’ve also found moments of joy and magic. It’s the laughter of my nephews as we watch a movie  together for the hundredth time. It’s a quiet walk in nature, reminding me of the beauty still surrounding me. It’s the small victories, such as finishing a task I thought I couldn’t do, or having the energy for a full day without feeling drained. These moments remind me that even when life doesn’t look like the story I planned, it can still hold wonder and joy.

If you’re navigating your own unexpected turns, I want to encourage you to embrace your inner Elphaba:

  • Let Go of the things that weigh you down, whether it’s fear, doubt, or old expectations.

  • Own Your Story, imperfections and all—it’s what makes you unique.

  • Take a Brave Step, no matter how small, toward the life you want to create.

And most importantly, don’t be afraid to lean on your community. Whether it’s one person or an entire team, having someone in your corner can make all the difference.

As Elphaba sings, “Something has changed within me, something is not the same. I’m through with playing by the rules of someone else’s game.”

We all have moments when life goes off script. But those moments are also opportunities to defy gravity, to rise above the chaos, and to discover the strength and resilience within ourselves.

So, what’s holding you back? What step can you take today to embrace your story, defy the odds, and soar?

You’ve got this—and you’re not alone in the journey.

I’d love to hear your story. Have you faced a moment when life went off script? How did you embrace your inner Elphaba? Share in the comments—I can’t wait to hear how you’re defying gravity!

Building My Castle: Finding Magic in Starting Over After 40

Who said that we have to have it all figured out by now? By now, I mean at the age of 40. Here I am at 42, starting all over. I’m, sorta, jobless. Single. I’ve received guardianship of two of my nephews. I’m living with my mom. And did I mention that I have stage 4 metastatic breast cancer? You read that right. Cancer. Who decided to add this cherry on top of my sundae?

Let’s go back to February 2024, when I was laid off from my job as Strategic Director of Communications at a PR agency I loved. The news came just as I was about to head out on vacation. I didn’t see it coming. I’d just received a raise, and the owner of the agency had been sharing exciting future plans. Then, five months later, I got a life-changing call from my nephew and his brother asking if they could come live with me. Live with me? I thought. This would take my life in a completely new direction. I would go from occasional “auntie duties” to full-on “mom” responsibilities. But how could I say no? They needed me, and I knew I could help them get refocused in school and positioned for a positive future.

Meanwhile, I put in every effort to find a job—Indeed, LinkedIn, referrals, you name it. I was interviewing, but nothing was landing. I even considered returning to the classroom to teach just to bring in some income. Thankfully, I had enough savings to keep me afloat for a couple more months. But the money was running out... fast.

The pressure mounted daily. I started questioning everything—my life, my purpose, my worth. While I was stepping up as a great TT momma (auntie + momma) to my nephews, the struggles were real. Funds were low, and emotions were high, especially dealing with a nephew who had severe social and emotional trauma. On top of that, the hormonal medications I was taking to keep the breast cancer at bay sent my emotions on a roller coaster ride. Yet every day, I pushed myself to keep moving, trying to believe in my ability to get through it all.

I found solace in small, magical moments. Whether it was watching my favorite TikTok influencers go live from the Disney Parks or listening to my go-to TikTok DJs while cleaning up the mess my nephews left each morning, these tiny respites gave me a chance to reset. They quieted the racing thoughts telling me I wasn’t good enough or that I was failing at life.

I also turned to my faith. I wrote down Bible verses to recite daily, like 1 Peter 2:24 for healing and 2 Corinthians 9:8 for employment. And yes, I even included Psalm 37:4 to believe in God for a husband (come on, Boaz!). I was determined not to give up. I’d come too far and overcome too much. I had goals I still wanted to reach, no matter how overwhelming my circumstances seemed. These were my “magic” moments—the inner fuel I used to keep rebuilding my castle.

I’m curious: What magic moments do you rely on to push through life’s challenges? Share your stories in the comments. They just might help someone who’s struggling.

Also, here is the link to a gratitude journal I created to help shine a light on positive things in your life. Journaling just five minutes a day can really help build a healthy mindset.
